Press Release 2/25/13

The 2013 regional Oregon Battle of the Books championship took place on Saturday, February 23rd at Roseburg High School as the culminating event in the 12th annual Celebration of Literacy. Forty-nine teams participated in three divisions: grades 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12 in a round robin, quiz bowl type competition hosted by RHS National Honor Society and Douglas County 4H program. Students in each division read up to 16 books and answered questions on the content of those books.

Celebration of Literacy support of the Oregon Battle of the Books makes it possible to provide theme t-shirts for each team in matching school colors as well as some copies of OBOB books to each participating local school. Local financial sponsors include Mahalo Heating and Air Conditioning, Mercy Foundation's Tree of Hope, Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians, Ingram Books and Paramount Printing. Other sponsors include Altrusa International of Roseburg and Roseburg Public Schools.

Most of the schools were from Douglas County; however, there were some high schools from Lane County and a few Coos schools competing as well. The winners of the final battle competitions will compete at the state OBOB tournament to be held at Chemeketa Community College in Salem on April 13th.

At the 3-5 grade level, the winning team was Hucrest which defeated Highland Elementary of Reedsport in the final battle. Hucrest team members are Sophia Tate, Madison Bosley, Carter Lehrbach, Eliza Eckman, and Benjamin Herrold. They are coached by librarian Marie Felgentrager.

The division 6-8 winning team was Cobb School which defeated Fremont Middle School in the final match. Cobb School team members are Carson McVay, Connor McVay, Sarah Blum, and Seth Pabst. They are coached by parent Darla McVay. This is the second year in a row that Fremont has finished in the top 2 teams in its division.
