BATTLE OF THE BOOKS 2010
The 2010 local Battle of the Books championship took place on Saturday, February 27th at Roseburg High School as the culminating event in the annual Celebration of Literacy. Twenty-eight teams participated in two divisions: grades 3-5 and 6-8 in a round robin, quiz bowl type competition hosted by the RHS Honor Society, the Douglas County 4H program, Roseburg Public Schools, and Altrusa. Students in each division read up to 16 books and answered questions on the content of those books.
Joseph Lane MS battled Coffenberry MS to win the 6-8 Division title. Members of the Jo Lane team are Megan Deck, Carly McCullough, Katelyn Pardon, Emily Terhune, and Ashley Netz. The team was coached by English teacher Jennifer Canfield. Hucrest Elementary played Melrose to win the 3-5 Division title. Members of the Hucrest team are Allison Wheeler, Allison Forsloff, Dani Painter, Emily Wheeler, and Diana Richardson. They were coached by parent Chuck Wheeler. The 2010 reading champions for Douglas County will enjoy traveling trophies for the next year. Other teams which made it to the semi-final rounds include McGovern, Fir Grove, West Intermediate, and Sutherlin MS. All teams can be proud of their achievements as school winners.
Financial support of the Battle of the Books makes it possible to supply a set of books to each participating school and theme t-shirts for each team in matching school colors. This year's grant funders include: Mercy Foundation's Tree of Hope, Ingram Book, and Mahalo Heating and Air Conditioning.
Participation in this competition fosters a love of reading in students and can generate much excitement about academic achievement. The competition is open to all districts in Douglas County and currently participating school districts include Camas, Glide, North Douglas, Oakland, Roseburg, South Umpqua, Sutherlin, and Winston-Dillard. In most schools the school team is selected in a competition held in front of the entire student body, so the reach of the program impacts many students in each school. The positive image of reading created by the Battle of the Books has incalculable effects on the attitudes toward reading of a large number of county students.
